W Dubai – The Palm: Arabic calligraphy designed as part of the room experience

In 2018, I was commissioned to contribute an Arabic calligraphy wallcovering for the 350 guest rooms and suites at W Dubai – The Palm.

This was not a standalone artwork or logo. The composition had to operate at architectural scale, integrate with the interior design, and adapt to different colour themes while maintaining one recognisable visual idea throughout the hotel.

01 · The context

Creating a local voice inside a global hospitality environment

The hotel’s rooms combine contemporary architecture, reflective surfaces, bold colour, and wide views of the sea and Dubai skyline. The wall design needed to contribute a specifically Arabic layer without becoming traditional decoration or a disconnected cultural motif.

Its role was experiential: the calligraphy would be encountered at room scale, behind beds and seating areas, changing with daylight, lighting, furniture, and the view beyond the glass.

02 · The concept

A lyrical exchange between the room and the sea

The composition is inspired by a short lyrical dialogue associated with Fairuz. A quiet repeating background asks: «شايف البحر شو كبير»، while the bold foreground answers: «كبر البحر بحبك».

Together, the two lines create a visual conversation about the scale of the sea and a love imagined as greater. The idea connects directly with the waterfront setting while giving guests an emotional Arabic expression to discover within the room.

03 · A two-layer calligraphic system

Atmospheric pattern behind a confident contemporary response

The background phrase is enlarged, repeated, and reduced in contrast until it becomes an architectural texture. In front, a fluid graffiti-influenced Arabic composition provides the focal point with sharper colour, movement, and scale.

Background texture

Oversized Arabic forms create rhythm across the full wall without competing with the interior.

Foreground statement

The answer is drawn as a bold continuous gesture that remains legible from across the room.

Spatial composition

Scale and placement were considered in relation to beds, seating, lighting, mirrors, and wall proportions.

04 · Colour adaptation

One composition, adapted to the identity of different rooms

Each room and suite carries its own colour atmosphere. The calligraphy was therefore developed as a flexible system: the structure remains consistent while the foreground tones shift to complement the furniture, textiles, mosaic surfaces, and lighting.

A high-energy version connects with the room’s coloured textiles and reflective mosaic surfaces.

A cooler treatment responds to the water view while remaining distinct from the neutral background pattern.

05 · Contrast and atmosphere

The same visual language can shift from daylight to dramatic interior mood

In darker spaces, the pattern becomes denser and more graphic. Red, magenta, and violet lettering creates a luminous focal point against black surfaces, while the layered calligraphy continues across the wall as part of the room’s atmosphere.

This adaptability allowed the artwork to remain coherent across the hotel without making every room feel identical.

06 · The outcome

Arabic calligraphy integrated into hospitality at architectural scale

The completed installation turned Arabic language into an active part of the guest experience across 350 rooms and suites. The design carries one lyrical idea through different spatial and colour conditions while remaining connected to the sea, the city, and the contemporary energy of the hotel.

The project demonstrates how custom Arabic lettering can work beyond print and branding—as environmental graphics that shape mood, place, and memory.
