Personal Identity · Contemporary Arabic Calligraphy

Designing for myself: an Arabic wordmark that accepts complexity

Designing identities for other people requires distance, focus, and interpretation. Designing one for yourself removes that distance. The brief becomes personal: which parts of your experience, temperament, and creative values deserve to become visible?

This contemporary Arabic logo turns my name, «نهاد», into an expressive personal signature—balancing calligraphic movement, controlled geometry, and a visual language that does not reduce creativity to convenient minimalism.

01 · The challenge

The hardest identity to design is often your own

After more than two decades of designing logos for others, the process still requires concentration and invention. Yet a personal identity creates a different kind of challenge: the designer is simultaneously the client, the subject, and the critic.

I did not want simplicity to become an easy escape from that tension. The objective was to create a mark honest enough to hold movement, contradiction, discipline, and passion—the real complexity of a long creative journey.

02 · The Arabic wordmark

Interwoven strokes turn the name «نهاد» into a living signature

The letterforms are built as a connected composition rather than a line of separate characters. Broad curves, sharp terminals, overlaps, and changing weight create a sense of motion while keeping the name at the centre of the form.

The layered treatment introduces depth without imitating traditional calligraphic tools. It acknowledges Arabic calligraphy as a visual heritage while allowing the mark to operate in a contemporary identity system.

Calligraphic movement

Extended curves and directional strokes give the mark energy and a recognisable rhythm.

Controlled complexity

Overlaps are deliberate, balancing expression with a coherent overall silhouette.

Personal authorship

The wordmark functions as a name, a signature, and an expression of design character.

03 · The visual system

A restrained framework supporting an expressive Arabic centre

Deep indigo gives the identity authority and continuity, while warm cream softens the presentation. A magenta accent introduces contrast and energy; supporting taupe and blue-grey tones expand the system without competing with the wordmark.

The vertical NIHAD.ME signature provides a quiet Latin counterpoint. Enlarged and cropped letterforms become secondary graphics, allowing the identity to move beyond a repeated logo into a flexible visual language.

04 · Reflection

A personal identity should reveal, not simplify away

For me, this project was not an exercise in creating a neutral personal monogram. It was a way to combine the principles I value in Arabic design: respect for language, confidence in form, technical control, and space for expressive risk.

The result is intentionally personal. It accepts that a creative identity can carry tension and detail while still functioning as a recognisable system.

05 · The outcome

A contemporary Arabic signature with room to evolve

The completed identity combines a distinctive Arabic name mark, a supporting Latin signature, a controlled palette, and graphic elements derived from the calligraphy itself. It can move between compact logo use and more expressive compositions while remaining recognisably personal.

More importantly, the project reflects a principle that guides my wider practice: Arabic lettering can be culturally grounded, technically rigorous, and unmistakably contemporary at the same time.
